Hong Kong’s Airport Authority has instructed one of the city’s major contractors in charge of a construction project at its second terminal building to resolve an overdue salary issue after workers staged a protest on Friday morning.
In a reply to the Post, the Airport Authority said dozens of construction workers gathered near the Airport South Interchange over alleged labour disputes.
“[The authority] immediately deployed staff to the scene and reported it to the police. Due to the incident, traffic near the interchange was affected,” its spokesman said.
“[The authority] informed bus companies promptly and arranged traffic diversions. Traffic on the relevant roads resumed to normal from 10.15am.”
It said it would closely monitor the follow-up actions by the main contractor.
“[The authority] is highly concerned about the incident and demanded that Gammon Construction, the main contractor, should settle the issue promptly and properly, and ensure that all the workers receive their wages accordingly,” it said.
An online video showed a group of workers holding slogans walk to the traffic lane, forcing some cars to stop and move backwards.
