This week, President Trump fired two Democratic members of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Former FTC Chair Lina Khan calls the firings “blatantly illegal” and a sign of Trump prioritizing his billionaire donors. Under Khan’s leadership, the FTC pursued an ambitious antitrust agenda targeting corporate giants, including some companies owned by Trump’s billionaire supporters. While Trump’s FTC may slow federal scrutiny of big business, bipartisan support for antitrust enforcement will make it difficult to reverse the momentum Khan created. At a basic level, Khan warns that allowing corporations to abuse and bully people is antithetical to American values. “People want a government that’s willing to fight for them, including when it means standing up to powerful corporations,” she said.
