Tropical Storm Shanshan was moving slowly east off Wakayama Prefecture on Saturday afternoon, bringing widespread torrential rain to a broad swath of the country, including in the Kanto and Tokai regions — with the storm’s effects even felt as far away as Hokkaido.
The Meteorological Agency was continuing to urge people to remain vigilant for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and rising water levels in rivers. As of Saturday afternoon, Shanshan had left six people dead, one missing and at least 131 injured, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
As of 10 a.m. Saturday, at least 1,407,884 people across 637,339 households in 46 cities were under nonmandatory evacuation orders, with residents urged to move to safe places.
