Johnson appears to fall short in speaker reelection

Mike Johnson appears not to have secured enough votes to be reelected speaker on the first ballot Friday.

Three House Republicans voted for someone else as Democrats united in support of Hakeem Jeffries.

The contest is expected to head to a second ballot, in which Johnson will try to flip enough GOP votes to win the floor election and keep his gavel for the 119th Congress.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
