Google’s Gemini AI is getting more personal, using a not-so-surprising source. The popular AI chatbot can now use your Google search history to provide responses more tailored to you.
Gemini Uses Search Results for Better Answers
To tie your Google search history with Gemini, you can select Personalization (experimental) from the model drop-down menu. You will remain in control of your search history and disconnect from Gemini at any time.
By being able to see recent Google searches, Gemini can help provide even better answers. For example, Google says when you ask Gemini for restaurant recommendations, it will reference recent food-related searches. Or, when you ask for travel advice, the AI will respond based on the destinations you’ve searched for.
Gemini will only use your search history when it’s determined that the data is actually helpful to a conversation.
The feature is rolling out to all Gemini users on the web today and will “gradually” be rolling out to the Gemini mobile apps.
In the coming months, the Personalization feature will expand to connect to other Google services, most notably Photos and YouTube.
With stiff competition, it makes a lot of sense for Google to bring search results to Gemini. I’m interested to try it out and see how truly personalized the results are.
Anyone Can Now Use Gemini’s Deep Research
Gemini’s Deep Research feature originally rolled out in December 2024, but only for subscribers to Gemini Advanced. But Google has also announced that the research tool is now free for everyone to use and has been upgraded with Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental.
While Gemini is often used to answer simple questions, Deep Research is different. Think of it as a research assistant that can search and find information across the web on a subject, providing a detailed report with citations.
Deep Research will even show its thoughts while browsing to show you a real-time look at how it’s solving the research task. You can try it out by selecting Deep Research in the new prompt bar or the model drop-down.
