Justin Amash, a former Republican member of the House from Michigan, slammed President Donald Trump and his Cabinet after Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem flubbed a basic question about the Constitution.
“The dumbest people are in charge,” he wrote on X. “And it’s not an accident. They weren’t chosen for competence or constitutional adherence. They were chosen for spineless sycophancy.”
Noem’s inability to define a fundamental Constitutional right left many aghast, including Amash, who also shared a quote by Friedrich Hayek, a 20th century academic often admired by libertarians:
Amash spent a decade in the House, most of those years as a Republican. However, he became a fierce Trump critic during the president’s first term in office, left the party to become an independent, and then a Libertarian.
He was the first, and remains the only, member of the Libertarian Party to serve in Congress.
Amash eventually returned to the GOP to run for U.S. Senate last year, but lost in the primary.
