Apple (AAPL, Financials) agreed to settle for $95 million a class action lawsuit that accused its Siri voice assistant of recording users without their consent. The case, Lopez v. Apple, was filed in March 2021 and alleges Siri-enabled devices captured private conversations after unintended activations.
More than a decade’s worth of Apple devices are implicated, including iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBooks, iMacs, HomePods, Apple TVs, and iPod Touches. The complaint claimed that snippets of private conversations were inadvertently recorded and shared with third parties or used to target users with ads.
The settlement applies to individuals who owned or purchased Siri-enabled devices between Sept. 17, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2024. To qualify, users must declare under oath that Siri activated during a private conversation without their intent.
Claims must be submitted through the official Lopez Voice Assistant Settlement website by July 2, 2025. Eligible users may receive up to $20 per device, capped at five devices per claimant, for a maximum payout of $100. No claim code is required to file.
A final approval hearing is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 1. If approved and unopposed, payments will be processed shortly after. The timeline for distribution remains uncertain.
