One of the biggest downsides of Android’s Find My Device network – now called the “Find Hub” – was a lack of UWB (ultra-wideband) support for easily finding nearby trackers. Now, that’s finally about to be available, and Google is also teasing luggage and airline integration too.
Most trackers for the Android Find Hub are currently Bluetooth-only. That includes trackers from Chipolo, Pebblebee, and more. The Moto Tag, released last year, is the only one with built-in support for UWB radios. That radio allows for more precise directions when finding a nearby tracker, and it’s something that Apple’s AirTag offers, as does Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag.
While hardware support has been around for months, the software had not yet caught up until now.
Google has today promised that UWB support for the “Find Hub” app on Android will roll out “later this month” on supported trackers. For now, that lists only includes the Moto Tag.
Beyond that, Google is also teasing some further support for new hardware types. This includes Pebblebee’s effort to integrate trackers into other objects, launching first with “Loc8” in skis from Peak. Trackers that support Find Hub will also be coming to luggage from July and Mokobara. Google says there are also new “Disney-themed Bluetooth tags” set to launch from Pixbee, a brand that primarily makes kids smartwatches.
“Early next year,” Google adds that airline partnerships will allow users to share the location of a luggage tracker with the airline. This will start with Aer Lingus, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, and Singapore Airlines. Apple has also worked with airlines to leverage the AirTag to find lost luggage with airlines such as United, Delta, and some of the airlines Google is also working with.
