If you’re anything like me, you always want your controllers to be wired up to your PC. Convenience be damned, but I need to ensure every input is read as quickly as possible. Fortunately, it seems that LG and Razer are teaming up to give latency curmudgeons like me a Bluetooth controller that works just as quickly as a wired one.
LG and Razer Announce a New 1ms Latency Bluetooth Controller
As revealed on the LG Newsroom, the company is collaborating with Razer and MediaTek to make what it calls “the world’s first Bluetooth Ultra-Low Latency (BT ULL) controller.” They showed off his new technology during this year’s LG webOS Summit, and its main selling point is its incredible latency.
In the demo, the controller could send over commands in the span of 1 ms, which is lightning-fast for a Bluetooth controller. The demonstration used an LG webOS smart TV, so we’re not sure if this technology will work on all devices or just on LG’s televisions.
Because it was based on a smart TV, the demo mainly focused on cloud gaming, showing off how the BT ULL controller helped reduce input lag. Because cloud gaming services hosts the game on an external server, there’s always some delay between your PC and the cloud, and using a Bluetooth controller only adds to it. With this controller, you would theoretically cut down that delay as close as possible, which is great news for competitive cloud gamers.
LG and Razer Haven’t Revealed Much About the Controller
So, what is this controller called, when will it come out, and how much will it cost? Unfortunately, the announcement didn’t cover these elements. It’s likely that the companies are still ironing out the details, such as designing the shell and working out an affordable price point.
Fortunately, there’s a good chance we’ll see this controller on store shelves one day. If LG and Razer at at the point where they can confidently show off this technology to the general public, it’s likely not a throwaway prototype doomed to never see the light of day.
