Android 16 QPR1 redesigns ‘Wallpaper & Style’ and lock screen

Android 16 QPR1 launched during Google I/O 2025, and it brings some massive changes with Material 3 Expressive. The new design language completely redesigns Android 16’s lock screen customization options.

With Material 3 Expressive, a lot about Android’s UI design has changed. Icons are bolder and a little more lively with a refined touch. The new designs are a huge part of Android 16’s first public release, and some of the option menus we’re familiar with are getting changes along with the broader shift.

In Android 16 QPR1, lock screen customization makes a few key changes. First off, the clock menu is displayed under a dedicated button, rather than in a small settings cog under the preview image for size and color, and clock options available via a swipe.

That menu offers up buttons with small visualizations of each clock style, making it easier to sift through designs. Colors are also in this menu, and they get a working slider that changes intensity. There is the default Material You color option, along with several other colors to pick from.

Size settings don’t change, with dynamic and small options still present.

Another big adjustment is how shortcuts are displayed. The new lock screen shortcuts menu offers a grid of options instead of a carousel. This makes it a little easier to compare the available choices at a glance. The toggle between left and right is now at the bottom of that screen.

Some notification settings can now be accessed via the lock screen settings. Instead of a single “Show notifications on the lock screen” option, there is now a full menu with view settings and several toggles. That includes a compact and full view, as well as a brand new option called “Show seen notifications.” This will hide notifications after they’ve been viewed, if toggled off.

Silent and sensitive content notifications can be toggled on or off here, as well. These options moved from the “more lock screen options” page.

The expanded notification settings still exist, but it has been refined with Material 3 Expressive.
