Three people were fatally shot outside a driver’s license office in Louisville, Ky., on Friday, and several people fled in a vehicle, the police said.
The victims were found in the parking lot, the Louisville Metro Police Department said in a statement posted to social media. One man died at the scene and two women were taken to a hospital, where they died, the police said.
There were “no known suspects,” the police said in the statement. When asked if the shooting was a murder-suicide, Maj. Donald Boeckman, a division commander, said no.
Major Boeckman said at a news conference that aired on local television stations that officials were still investigating, collecting video surveillance and interviewing witnesses. The police did not have preliminary information about a motive or whether the three victims were connected, he said.
“There is no indication this violent act has, or is going to, extend beyond the event which occurred,” the police said in an email after the news conference. “While we always suggest people be mindful of their surroundings and take normal precautions, there is no sign of increased danger to the public.”
Allen Blair, a spokesman for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, which oversees the state’s licensing offices, said the shooting happened outside the building, and the employees in the office were safe.
“We did have security at the office, and locked down the building immediately,” he said. “Employees are leaving and the office will be closed the remainder of the day.”
Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky called the shooting “a senseless act of violence.”
“I want to thank the brave law enforcement officers who responded quickly to the scene and to our @KYTC team members who worked quickly to protect their fellow Kentuckians,” he said on social media. “Let’s pray for the family members of those lost during this difficult time.”
